The Educational Opportunities Center in New Bedford offers one-on-one appointments with college counselors who can walk your family through applying for financial aid and taking out low-interest loans, if needed. Make an appointment with a team member and ask what documents you should bring with you to your appointment. This is an excellent FREE resource.

There are lots of acronyms that can make the financial aid process confusing. Let's break it down!
FSA = Federal Student Aid. You'll need a FSA ID in order to complete federal financial aid forms.
FAFSA = Free Application for Federal Student Aid – needed for government loans & grants
CSS = College Scholarship Service. The College Board’s CSS Profile is an online application that collects information used by colleges, universities, professional schools, and scholarship programs to award financial aid from sources outside of the federal government. After you submit your application, the College Board sends it to the colleges and scholarship programs you have chosen. Here is a list of schools that require the CSS Profile - link. Be sure to check with your schools to see if it is required.
To recap, FAFSA provides federal grants, loans, and other types of federal government assistance, and the CSS Profile is an application that universities use to gauge how much non-federal financial aid you need.
EFC = Expected Family Contribution. How much will you and/or your family be expected to contribute to the cost of college? Learn more by using the EFC calculator – link.
Net Price Calculator – The net price you will pay is a college’s sticker price for tuition and fees minus the grants, scholarships, and education tax benefits you receive. The net price you pay is specific to your family because it's based on your personal circumstances and the college’s financial aid policies. You can search each school's website for a net price calculator (example) –link.
Check Your Email — Some scholarships require you to confirm your enrollment (after the college's add/drop period) and submit additional documents to keep your scholarship (course registration, transcript, etc.). Be sure to follow up.
