Reading attitudes and the frequency of students engaged in reading are connected. In my classes, I encourage a great deal of reading, and find that attitudes toward reading can be improved by increasing the frequency. I also believe that most students don't hate reading, I believe they just haven't found the right books that interest them.
So, with this in mind, I do my best to encourage students to not give up, and always have a book to read, whenever there is available time.
Students will also be reading trade books throughout the year, in class, in hopes of developing more avid readers and introducing them to different genres that they may find they love. I, too, be reading to them each day, and introducing them to many authors and books.
Hang on, reading is going to take you places!
