We have a very keen group of students from Year 5-8 who are our Nature Warriors. These children take responsibility for:
* planting, weeding and harvesting in our vegetable gardens
* collecting clean, used paper for recycling from classes
* growing and planting out in our local neighbourhood native seedlings through the Trees for Survival NZ network
* pest control as part of our ongoing commitment to Predator Free NZ
* growing and hatching Honshu Butterflies for bio-control (Japanese Honeysuckle)
Our keen Rat Rangers met with Andy Saunders from neighbouring Whiriwhiri Pest Control Group. Andy brought along a living, breathing ferret in a cage and showed the Rat Rangers a new type of trap which captures live pests, sending an automatic message to a device to let people know that a trap has been activated.
2023 Update: Planting at Rereteewhioi Marae, Waiuku
It was wonderful to have the opportunity to join other Waiuku schools in supporting the Rereteewhioi Marae with planting out in a wetland area on their site. As well as the planting, we learnt about the history of the marae which has connections to the maunga Taupiri and to the awa Waikato.
