In our classroom we use a colored card system (Pink, Purple, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red) to monitor behavior. This mirrors the school's behavior policy but makes it more of a visual understanding for primary age students. All students start each day on "green" and the idea is to maintain a green level all day. When students make poor behavior choices they will need to take ownership and "turn" their card to the next color. A card change from "green" to "yellow" means more than one warning was given to change the undesirable behavior. A card change from "yellow" to "orange" results in multiple warnings and a loss of 5 minutes of recess to reflect on behavior/conference with teacher. Changing a card from "Orange" to "Red" means the student had to be removed from the classroom and parents are notified by the teacher or front office. If a student is going above and beyond by demonstrating our 8 Character Keys then they will receive a "purple" card or even the rare "pink" card for going above and beyond classroom expectations. Behavior is recorded daily in their Behavior Book that is kept at school (which contains a calendar page for each month and at the end of the month behavior rewards are given out based on how many days the student is on "green, purple or pink").
Ideally, all behavioral consequences are handled within the classroom and depending on the severity will depend on how quickly the parents are notified. Any "Red" card offenses automatically call for a phone call to the parents (by either myself or administration). Any "Orange" offense will typically result in a loss of recess while a student problem solves with the teacher and fills out a Behavior Reflection sheet that will be sent home for parents to discuss/sign.
***No news is good news! If you do not hear from me about your student's behavior then your student is consistently meeting our second grade expectations.
Every week I send out a "2nd Grade News & Notes" email which includes important upcoming information going on in our classroom and at school. If you are not receiving my emails please email me so I can make sure the correct email address is on file. Lauren.Funk@oside.us
Every Thursday an Ivey Ranch Coyote Communications Folder will be sent home with your student. This folder will include important information from the school, along with classwork, assessments, and book order forms. Everything that is sent home is for you to keep and review with your student. Folders are due back Friday morning.
Once a week our class will go to the school library where students will listen to a story from our librarian and then have the opportunity to check out or browse the books. Library books will typically stay in the classroom but if you would like your student to bring them home then please let me know.
Fun Friday is a weekly reward for students who have completed their homework. Fun Friday takes place during the last hour on Fridays and is a surprise activity each week (art project, science experiment, free choice, etc.). Students who fail to turn in their homework, or don't complete the minimum requirement, will not be able to participate in this fun event but instead will have to complete their missing work.
If you would like to purchase books for your home I have an account set up through Scholastic. Scholastic Book Order Catalogs will go home in the Wednesday Folders, but all orders need to be placed online at our Class Reading Club Page using our special code NCNRC. At the end of each month I will submit the class book order, and your student's books will arrive within the next week. The reason book orders are only placed once a month is so we can accumulate the most class points to earn free books. Every dollar spent will give our class points which can be redeemed for more books for our classroom library.
**By the end of 2nd Grade students should be reading at a "M/N" Guided Reading Level (or higher). Look for the GRL when purchasing books.
I always love having volunteers help out in our class, along with parents who are interested in attending future field trips. Please email me if you are interested in becoming a volunteer and/or interested in chaperoning future field trips/special events. For parents who are interested in volunteering the school has a strict policy that younger children can not accompany the parent when they are volunteering. This is to limit classroom distractions and for safety concerns in the Teacher Workroom.
Student birthdays are always an exciting time, and I love celebrating them within our classroom. If your student would like to bring a treat for the class then please let Mrs. Funk know- Lauren.Funk@oside.us. Due to student allergies, all snacks need to be purchased through the cafeteria. Please click HERE for birthday treat options!
Summer Birthday? Don't worry! If your student's birthday falls between June 7th- August 13th then we will celebrate those students during the last week of school. More information will be provided as we get closer to the end of the school year.
