The Funk Five
Mrs. Funk was born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia about 20 minutes outside of Washington D.C. Ever since Mrs. Funk was 6 years old, she always knew she wanted to be a teacher. In high school, Mrs. Funk was in the Teacher Cadet program where she got to visit local elementary schools to observe teachers and interact with students in small groups.
When Mrs. Funk turned 18 she moved to North Carolina where she went to college to study Elementary Education at East Carolina University (Go Pirates!) where she also played Field Hockey. In 2010, she graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's in Elementary Education and a concentration in Child Development and Family Relations. She then moved to Tallahassee, Florida where she accepted a job to teach 6th Grade Advanced Earth/Space Science at Florida State University's K-12 Research & Charter School. Mrs. Funk was also the Florida High School JV Girl's Soccer Coach and an elementary tutor in her spare time.
In 2011, Mrs. Funk moved across the country to Encinitas, California to be closer to Mr. Funk's family and to embark on new adventures. Before teaching in the Oceanside School District, she worked in the Encinitas School District with the special education program and was the STEAM teacher (Kindergarten- 4th Grade Science) in the Solana Beach School District.
In 2014, Mrs. Funk came to the Oceanside Unified School District and worked on Camp Pendleton for 9 years before accepting a transfer to Ivey Ranch to teach second grade. During her time on Camp Pendleton, she taught kindergarten and second grade and became very close with the military student demographic so she decided to pursue a Master's Degree with that as her focus.
In 2015, Mrs. Funk received her Master's Degree in Teaching with a Thesis on The Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Effects of a Military Deployment on a Primary Age Student. She believes that this has helped her relate to the students and families that she taught.
In 2016, Mrs. Funk got married to the love of her life and they have three children (a girl and two boys) that keep them very busy!
When Mrs. Funk isn't teaching she can be found hanging out with her family, relaxing at the beach, camping in their 1968 VW Bus, or traveling and exploring the outdoors.
