Tips & Resources for Goal-Setting at Home
Setting smaller, achievable goals over time often leads to greater achievement than setting one large goal. For instance, setting the large and high pressure goal of getting straight A's can feel daunting, let's look at breaking that goal down. Ask yourself and your student the following questions: Which obstacles do you need to overcome?Which specific skills do you need to improve? Which strengths can you use to your advantage? Have your student write out the goal and place a visual reminder in your student's workspace.
Example broken-down goals:
I will complete all of my HW by 5pm every day and have my parents check for completion. I will use headphones and a timer system to help me stay focused while I work.
I will improve my test scores by making a study plan for all my tests one week ahead of time and studying for 20 minutes every day.
I will use my strength of talking to others to ask my teacher for help when I need it by raising my hand in class or seeing the teacher after class
