AI in the Classroom

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be a valuable tool for learning, but only when it is used thoughtfully, ethically, and transparently. In my classroom, AI is neither automatically permitted nor automatically prohibited. Its appropriate use depends on the assignment, the learning goal, and the kind of thinking students are expected to do for themselves.

OPUSD allows teachers to establish classroom-specific AI policies consistent with district expectations. I have developed mine to give students and families clear guidance about when AI may be used, when permission is required, and when its use would undermine the purpose of an assignment.

Assignments may be identified using a simple stoplight system:

• Green: AI use is allowed within the stated guidelines.

• Yellow: Students must ask before using AI.

• Red: AI use is not permitted.

Students are responsible for checking the instructions rather than assuming that AI is acceptable simply because a tool is available. When AI is used, students must disclose that use honestly and provide enough information for me to understand how the tool contributed to their work. I may also ask students to explain their ideas, reasoning, vocabulary, evidence, calculations, or writing choices during our weekly meetings. A student should be able to demonstrate genuine understanding of anything submitted in their name.

My goal is to help students learn how to use powerful tools without allowing those tools to replace the intellectual work that leads to growth. AI can support brainstorming, feedback, organization, practice, and revision—but when used improperly, it can create the appearance of learning without the substance. Used properly, AI supports learning. Used improperly, it counterfeits it.

All students are required through Homeroom to read, acknowledge, and sign my classroom AI policy. Parents or guardians are also asked to review and acknowledge it. The complete policy and related guidance are linked below.
