10:15 Preserving Mobile Devices, TJ Wagner and Nancy Rittie, Digital Forensic Examiner (DFE), FBI Baltimore
When dealing with digital evidence, the first step is to preserve it. This means saving the state of data on that device so it can be extracted or copied and analyzed later. As mobile devices are constantly changing and upgrading, the process may not be as simple as turning airplane mode on or removing the SIM card to prevent the phone from reaching any networks and modifying data. This presentation will cover some of the considerations and best practices when it comes to seizing mobile devices, and how the decisions you make when initially seizing a phone can affect the data that you may get out of it. We will also discuss other factors that influence the availability of data, such as cloud backups and performing different types of extractions.
