ABA , Applied Behaviour Analysis is NOT what Autistics need
For consideration:
ABA is a biillion-dollar(Allen, 2023)
ABA makes their money by using operant conditioning to target and modify “maladaptive” or “socially significant” behaviours and reinforces “adaptive” behaviours using rewards and aversives(Leaf et al., 2018)
strategies develeoped based on animal training AND outlawed as being conversion therapies against those in the TSLGBTQIA community,
criticism of ABA from Autistic advocates and researchers worldwide who consider ABA dehumanizing and abusive (Anderson,2023; Bettin, 2021; Kraemer, 2023; Shkedy et al., 2021),
high risk of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has been associated with exposure to ABA (Kupferstein, 2018).
effectiveness and appropriateness of ABA for Autistics has been questioned (Donovan, 2020; Sandoval-Norton, 2019),
despite the outcry, ABA is still a frequently prescribed therapy for Autistic children (Hyman et al., 2020)
For Digging Deeper
This is a Facebook page set up by Neurodivergent people in 2017, most of whom are parents of autistic children and many of whom had direct experience being in therapies as children.
It was started in order to share different approaches, specific interventions and supports for Autistic children so people can make informed choices since parents searching the internet were only being given the tragedy narrative on their child and they didn't and don't know where to go or who to listen to.
They provide information as objectively as possible and open up the dialogue, while also reminding families the key is to understand Autism and how it impacts someone's ways of experiencing the world. Reading Autistics' articles and meeting Autistics is pivotal.
Join the page, read the content, peruse the chat and interact with a community who shares the desire to find and share better ways than ABA.
An Autistic Parenting Guide by an Autistic Parent: "Autism, Moon"
Jules Edwards, aka "Autistic, Typing" is an Indigenous autistic parent of autistic children, and she created the online resource #AutismMoon to help other parents. In this webinar our Equity, Justice, and Representation consultant Morénike Giwa-Onaiwu interviews Jules about this guide. They discuss finding common ground between autistic adults and parents of autistic children who may be new to learning about autism, and not fully educated on the issues.
