For this week’s Behavioural challenge, I completed the Digital Flourishing® Survey created by the Digital Wellness Institute. This tool operationalized behaviours related to the 8 domains of flourishing. This survey asked participants to rate statements related to each dimension of digital flourishing. Personal responses identified areas of need for digital wellness. Currently, I have risk factors associated with Productivity, Environment and Communication.
When I completed this quiz, I also considered my next stage of life in retirement. For example: Productivity - "Right now, I have to be productive. The nature of my life with work and school dictates that I manage my time well. However, I wonder whether I will be able to maintain the same focus in retirement. Productivity may be a concern moving forward." Research on wellness in middle adulthood identifies social connection (Margolis, R., Verdery, A. M., & Smith-Greenaway, E., 2022) and physical health (Kekäläinen, T., Freund, A. M., Sipilä, S., & Kokko, K., 2020) as key moderators for wellness. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind the protective factors and behaviours associated with Relationships and Physical Health for digital wellness in the future.

Agency, motivation, and self-determination are important for digital wellness and flourishing because they help people move from awareness to action. However, knowing what we “should do” is often not enough to create real change. The challenge is figuring out how to actually follow through, especially within the realities of everyday life and relationships. The Couples Check-In helps address this by creating a structured space for reflection and conversation. It supports partners in building agency through shared decision-making, strengthening motivation through accountability, and developing self-determination by setting intentional goals together. Drawing on cognitive behavioural strategies and emotional intelligence, the tool encourages individuals to reflect on their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and to make small, meaningful changes. In this way, digital wellness becomes a shared, relational process that supports connection, balance, and overall well-being.
Self-Determination Theory is a motivation theory emphasizing that all people have three basic psychological needs that influence how they act and grow (University of Rochester, Medical Center)
Autonomy—feeling that one’s behaviour is freely chosen and aligned with personal values.
Competence—feeling effective and capable in what one does.
Relatedness—feeling connected, cared for, and belonging with others.
