Our GCSE covers Christianity/Islam and four contemporary ethical themes, ensuring you explore a diverse and intriguing range of topics.
You will be challenged with questions about belief, values, meaning, purpose and truth, giving you the opportunity to develop your own attitudes towards religious, ethical and philosophical issues.
Our students will also gain an appreciation of how religion, philosophy and ethics form the basis of our culture. You will develop analytical and critical thinking skills, the ability to work with abstract ideas, leadership and research skills. All these skills will help prepare you for further study.
Component 1: The Study of Religions: Beliefs, Teachings and Practices
Christianity:
Key beliefs and teachings - the nature of God, beliefs about creation, beliefs about life after death, beliefs about Jesus and Salvation.~
Practices - worship, festivals, the role of the church in the local and worldwide community.
Islam:
Key beliefs and teachings - The six articles of faith, Tawhid, beliefs about the nature of God, angels, beliefs about predestination, life after death, Risalah/Prophethood, holy books, the Imamate.
Practices - worship, duties and festivals.
Component 2: Thematic Studies
Theme A Relationships and Families - Contraception, sexual relationships before marriage, homosexual relationships, sex, marriage, divorce, families, gender equality.
Theme B Religion and Life - Abortion, euthanasia, animal experimentation, the origins of the universe, use and abuse of the environment, the sanctity and quality of life, beliefs about life after death.
Theme C The Existence of God and Revelation - Visions, miracles, nature as general revelation, the design argument, the first cause argument, evil and suffering as an argument against the existence of God, arguments based on science against the existence of God.
Theme E Religion, Crime and Punishment - Good and evil intentions, causes of crime, opposition to unjust law, the aims of punishment, the treatment of criminals, forgiveness, the death penalty.
