The WJEC GCSE Physical Education syllabus encourages students to develop:
knowledge, skills and understanding of a range of relevant physical activities
an ability to plan, perform and evaluate physical activities
an understanding of effective and safe performance
an understanding of the role of sport and physical activity in society
an excellent foundation for advanced study
an enjoyment of physical activity
Aims & Objectives
1. A PRACTICAL SPECIFICATION
This course will provide a specification which will enable leanrers to engage in a practical course which motives and challenges them.
2. ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE
From this course learners will acquire the knowledge, understanding, skills & values to develop and maintain their physical activities and understand the benefits of health, fitness & well-being.
3. INTEGRATE THEORY & PRACTICE
This course Integrates theory & practice using two units, with focus on application of knowledge.
The syllabus provides students with an opportunity to study both the practical and theoretical aspects of Physical Education. It is also designed to foster enjoyment in physical activity. The knowledge gained should enable students to develop an understanding of effective and safe physical performance.
Students will study all of the following topics:
Health, Training and Exercise
Exercise Physiology
Movement Analysis
Psychology of sport & physical activity
Social, cultural and ethical issues
Physical activities make a significant contribution to syllabus aims and objectives, serving as a source of material to facilitate learning. Students will undertake a broad array of physical activities offering great scope and experience. Much of the theory content is learnt in a hands-on practical way.
All students take two compulsory components:
Paper 1: Theory 2 hours
One exam paper at the end of Year 11 on all 5 chapters above. This ranges from multiple choice, short answer, and extended answer questions.
Unit 2: The active participant in PE.
Learners are assessed in:
3 different activities in the role of performer.
at least one individual and one team sport from the approved list.
a personal fitness programmed linked to the chosen major activity.
Deadlines:
All coursework will be covered within normal lessons and agreed deadlines will be recorded in Student Planners.
A commitment to partake in learning both the theoretical and ALL practical aspects of the course is necessary for success
A responsible attitude to punctuality, self-organisation and self-discipline and a willingness to participate in many and various sporting experiences is expected of all students
All students must be involved in an array of competitive sport in QEII High School and play sports or be involved in sports in their own time
An enthusiasm for sport and physical activity
An awareness of sport in society. This is essential to build the knowledge required to apply examples to theory content
100% effort when participating in sport as an absolute minimum!
Not a good option if:
Unwilling to participate in certain activities other than preferred sports
You do not participate in sport or physical activity beyond games and PE lessons
You do not have kit frequently or have low participation rates in games/ PE
You don’t give 100% consistently
You have poor organisational skills. The course requires you to keep up with coursework deadlines and show passion to develop fitness
The course is designed for all students who have a genuine interest in Sport and who are perhaps considering taking the subject beyond GCSE level for further study or employment. The subject will be taught in co-educational groups for theory and two groups combined for practical. Games lessons are crucial to gathering assessment data for practical performance. Representing the school teams in multiple activities is extremely desirable.
