Introduction
At GCSE level, we use Pearson Edexcel.
GCSE (9-1) in Combined Science (1SC0) has recently been adopted by all 5 secondary schools on the IOM.
It is worth 2 GCSEs and has the new 9-1 grading system, as used by the UK.
Assessment
At the end of Year 11, you'll sit 6 exams.
Each exam paper is 1 hour and 10 minutes in length.
Each exam paper is 60 marks and contributes 16.67% to the qualification.
Each exam paper is a mixture of different question styles, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, calculations and extended open-response questions.
Calculators may be used in the examination.
Examination Tiers
There are also 2 different levels of examination papers.
Higher papers - get grades from 4-4 to 9-9.
Foundation papers - get grades from 1-1 to 5-5.
Timetabling
You will have six science lessons a week in Key Stage 4.
Two lessons for each of the 3 different sciences – Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
We have specialist teachers for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. So, you will end up seeing 3 different science teachers during the week.
