Distance Learning Schedule

Logistics and Protocol

In order to make the transition for you and your child in this Distant Learning experience more pleasant, please do the following as soon as possible.

Logistics for learning:

  1. Setup a place conducive for learning, depending on the age of your child. Please avoid having your child on a device for many hours of the day unsupervised as there is no substitute for adult supervision when students are online. Please reference Common Sense Media where you can find great resources for you and your child.

  1. Download the ZOOM platform we will be using for our students in these coming weeks. To ensure a pleasant experience with your child’s first ZOOM classroom, please download and install the application. Please use your OGS account to “sign in”. No setup process of your personal information is required.

Online Protocol:

  1. No uniform is required for students, however, girls from Grades 4 and up must wear their hijab if they are on video. Appropriate dress is required for both genders.

  2. For Grades 6 and up, we strongly recommend the use of OGS Provisioned Chromebooks only for Distant Learning due to the availability of security system, GoGuardian, on the Chromebooks. We are unable to monitor any device, other than school provisioned Chromebooks, including phones.

  3. It is preferable for your child to use a computer/Chromebooks with headphones, including a mic, if they have them during the ZOOM sessions.

  4. Teachers may record their session and upload to Google Classroom. No ZOOM content will be uploaded to public sites and are being used for monitoring purposes only. Moreover, the recordings are focused on the recorder and not the students.

Details for Instruction via Distance Learning:

ZOOM meetings will be set up at the start of the day (before 9:00 am). All students are expected to enter their respective meeting rooms all day based on their daily class schedules.

During the scheduled time teachers have for their classes, they will conduct a hybrid of the activities listed below during their period on the regular school day timetable

      • live video sessions using ZOOM,

      • assign prerecorded video or voice file for the class to watch

      • assign activities, assignments, quizzes using Google Classroom

Class Schedules

JK to Grade 3 Schedule:

Parents access the content on their own but teachers are available to answer questions online through the Google classroom from 9:00am-11:00am. The morning duah will be conducted via ZOOM at 9:00am each day followed by morning circle. Each teacher will check in with students individually at least once a week for a pre-scheduled 10 minute call, to provide some live interaction. Parents can expect to have an invitation for this interaction from ZOOM via email.

The homeroom teacher initiates the ZOOM conference call to run all day. The morning Dua will be conducted via ZOOM at 9:00 am each day. The timetable of classes on each day is the same as what would be run at OGS, however, each period is 25 minutes long. Students have a 10 minute break between periods. Guidance counselling services will be available for students by reaching out to the Guidance team.

    1. OGS: Ms. Rashid at h.rashid@olivegroveschool.ca

    2. OGMS and OGHS: Ms. Nensey at s.nensey@olivegroveschool.ca

Attendance and Accountability

Teachers will contact you if your child is not on track (e.g. not engaged with Distant Learning, submitting assignments and quizzes, etc).

Teachers will be using Google Classroom assignment, quiz assignment or Question with most sessions, as an exit quiz for example, to be able to track attendance and hold students accountable for their learning. Please allow students to upload recorded video or voice of their work on relevant subjects (Quran, French, Language, etc) if needed.

Daily attendance will be taken and on going assessment will be made. Keeping in mind the current unprecedented circumstances, the assessment and attendance will mainly be done for report card provision at the end of the semester.
