School Assembly

Mrs Littlewood welcomed all the children back to school following the Easter break during the virtual assembly this morning. The assembly was held outside main reception as Mrs Littlewood wanted to share something special with the children - see next section below .

During assembly we heard from some of our classes what they had been learning this week and as ever the classes provided an update on their token collection over the last couple of days.

School Moto

During our inset days this week staff were able to enjoy their lunch break on our picnic benches outside the main reception area. This does not normally happen during the normal busy school day so it was lovely to look at the environment around us and notice parts of the school you don't normally look at in detail!! On one occasion we noticed the wall plaque that is displayed on the original part of the school building with the words 'Goreu Cam, Cam Cyntaf' written. This plaque would have been installed when the school was built in 1912.

During assembly this morning, Mrs Littlewood showed the children and staff the plaque and reminded staff and pupils of the translation of these words. We wanted to share this with parents as we believe the words are lovely and epitomise the ethos of a primary school.

The words can be translated as 'The most important step is the first step' We will now use this phrase on our school branding.

School Values

Our school values for this month are Appreciation and Generosity. For these school values children have been asked to be kind, polite, grateful, look out for other people, and generally help out at home and in school.

Maintenance and Building work

During the Easter holidays we had a variety of building and maintenance works completed. We are delighted with the new flooring that has been laid in our main reception and corridor areas. Plus we have had a brand new room built in a cloakroom space - the sensory room is almost complete. and we look forward to sharing photos with you soon.

Professional Learning Days

At the beginning of the week we held two professional learning days. These days are so important for schools to plan and undertake training. Our teaching and support staff spent the first of these days developing our approach to the new curriculum for Wales which is being implemented in September. Please read on about an opportunity to find out more about our approach to the new curriculum. The second of our professional learning days focussed on digital security and planning for the term ahead.

Pupil Voice - Update from our pupil voice champions

Today we launched our new roles as part of Pupil Voice. We have been asked to run lunchtime clubs to support our pupils during their free time. Some of the ideas we came up with were: arts and crafts / board games / drama and sports clubs. Over the next few weeks we will be introducing a timetable of new clubs for pupils to join.

We also discussed Careers week and have been tasked with the job of finding out from our other pupils what careers they would like to learn about. We will be feeding back to Miss Lincoln next Wednesday. Another role we have been given is we are going to be supporting Miss Craven with Criw Cymraeg, promoting Welsh across the school.

Careers Week - 6th to 10th June

This year we are delighted to launch a new proposal for Oldcastle in the form of a Careers Week!! Our Careers Week will be taking place after May Half Term with the aim of providing children with inspiring and motivating career options available.

With the implementation of the new Curriculum for Wales we will support children to be

  • ambitious, capable learners ready to learn throughout their lives

  • enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work

  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world

  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

We believe that a Careers Week will be a fantastic opportunity for our children and achieves the four purposes as set out above. We hope to arrange for many visitors to come into school throughout the week and talk to the children and their job. We know that many of our parents have a job that will inspire our pupils so we hope you can help. If you think you can help please complete the google form with your details - Careers Week - Parents

Jubilee Celebrations

We are arranging an exciting event for children and staff on Thursday 26th May to commemorate the Queen’s Jubilee and celebrate the 110 year anniversary of Oldcastle Primary School. Children will have the opportunity to dress up in clothes from an allocated era and will also be learning a song from the decade to perform on the day. Each year group have chosen the following era to dress up as on the day. There is no expectation for parents to buy outfits and following the Easter holiday we will send some easy suggestions for parents to follow.

  • Reception - 70s

  • Year 1 - 50s

  • Year 2 - 40s

The PTA are arranging some special guests for the day and we are sure that children will enjoy all the excitement of the celebrations.

All children will be provided with a packed lunch from our catering team on the day and we would like to ensure children get the type of sandwich they will enjoy. Children will be provided with a wholemeal bread sandwich of their choice (see below for the choices available), a drink, crisps and ice cream. Please also confirm any special dietary requirements. Please return the form by 3rd May to allow the catering team to order supplies. Jubilee Celebrations Sandwich Request Form

The PTA are also arranging a Platinum Pudding Competition as part of our celebrations and we invite parents and carers to become involved. Get your baking equipment at the ready and marvel us with your creations that are fit for a Queen! Cakes should be brought into school on the morning of Thursday 26th May and we have some special guests to judge the cakes. We invite parents and carers to join us for a cake sale after school when we will announce the winners of the cake competition.
