Illinois State Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders visited Oak Lawn Community High School on Friday, September 6, 2024, to explore the school’s distinguished Arabic language program. The visit highlighted the state's dedication to enhancing educational diversity and supporting effective language instruction. Oak Lawn High School’s Arabic program launched in 2019, under the direction of Marwa Elmasry, has rapidly gained recognition for its comprehensive curriculum and innovative teaching methods. The program combines advanced language courses with cultural immersion experiences, aimed at equipping students with both linguistic proficiency and a deep understanding of Arab culture. Dr. Sanders’ visit was marked by a series of activities aimed at showcasing the program’s impact. The Superintendent engaged with students and staff in interactive sessions and participated in a roundtable discussion with District and school administrators. The visit featured student presentations demonstrating their proficiency in Arabic and their understanding of Arab culture and history. “We are delighted to host Dr. Sanders and share the successes of our Arabic program,” said Superintendent Shahe Bagdasarian. “His visit underscores the importance of language education and encourages us to continue our commitment to providing students with exceptional learning opportunities. We believe that learning a world language not only prepares our students for a global economy but also deepens their appreciation for different cultures.” Dr. Sanders’ visit reinforces Illinois’ commitment to advancing educational excellence and highlights the significance of multilingual programs in developing well-rounded, globally-conscious students.
Students in Arabic 4 & 4 Honors visited the Art Institute of Chicago to learn about the islamic art collection. Next they created posters, flyers, or website to describe one piece of art, its connection to them and its influence on other pieces of arts across the museums.

Despite COVID-19, Students Celebrated the World Arabic Language Day

بالرغم من الكوفيد-١٩، أحتفل الطلاب باليوم العالمي للغة العربية

Students in Arabic for Heritage Speakers2, Honors class celebrated the World Arabic Language Day by coming together as a class to learn more about the Arabic language as well as each other culture. Everyone and their group have come up with some creative ideas; then, we all shared it together. Some groups have created some Kahoots about different foods in each culture, and we had to guess which kind of food is in what group, for example a Palestinian dish, and they’d have to guess where the dish is from, Egypt, Yemen, etc. Additionally, students presented poems about Arabic language and others shared riddles from the rich Arabic cultures. The celebration ended with a kahoot competition about various Arabic dialects. It was a really fun day as we all got to know more about each other. I think this is a really great way to come together as one.
