Oklahoma City Public Schools provides free special education services for children with disabilities from birth through age 21 who:
Live within the OKCPS district, or
Attend an OKCPS school
Services are available for eligible infants, children, and young adults who may be experiencing difficulties in one or more of the following areas:
Autism
Deaf-Blindness
Emotional Disturbance
Hearing Impairment
Intellectual Disability
Other Health Impairments
Orthopedic Impairment
Specific Learning Disability
Speech/Language Impairment
Traumatic Brain Injury
Visual Impairment
Children suspected of having a disability are entitled to a comprehensive evaluation to determine eligibility for special education and related services through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) and the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE).
Evaluation Referrals (School-Age Students)
A parent/caregiver or school staff member may request an evlaution if a child is suspected of having a disability. For students attending an OKCPS campus, parents/caregivers should contact the school's school psychologist or speech-language pathologist. The school team will review the referral and work with the parent to determine whether an evalaution is needed.
Preschool Children (Ages 3-4, Not Enrolled in School)
Children, ages 3-4, who live in the OKCPS district but are not enrolled in school may still be referred for a developmental screening or evaluation. Parents/Caregivers who have concerns about their child's developmental milestones, speech and language development, motor skills, or cognitive skills can contact the Child Find team through Oklahoma City Public Schools to request a screening. If concerns are identified, the team may recommend a comprehensive evaluation or determine eligibility for preschool special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Educaiton Improvement Act (IDEIA) and the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE).
