Student and Guardian Responsibilities
empowerOKCPS: Device Program Handbook
OKCPS students play a vital role in maintaining the integrity and functionality of district technology. Students are expected to:
Use devices exclusively for academic purposes assigned by their teachers.
Keep their usernames and passwords confidential to protect personal and district data.
Report any suspicious, inappropriate, or concerning online activity to a trusted adult immediately.
Treat devices with care, avoiding physical damage and keeping them in assigned protective cases.
For Take-Home models, arrive each day with their device fully charged and ready for classroom use.
By meeting these expectations, students help ensure a safe, productive, and equitable learning environment for themselves and their peers.
Students shall not:
Access or share inappropriate content, or use devices for non-educational purposes during school hours.
Attempt to bypass security settings, management systems, or content filters.
Share or lend their assigned device to other individuals.
Tamper with device hardware, operating systems, or management profiles.
Use devices to harass, bully, threaten, or engage in harmful online behavior.
Violations of these guidelines will result in consequences aligned with the OKCPS Student Code of Conduct.
Parents and guardians are essential partners in ensuring students use district devices safely and appropriately at home. OKCPS encourages families to:
Establish household expectations for device use outside of school hours, including designated screen-free times and supervised usage locations.
Actively monitor online activity and regularly check student work and communications.
Engage in open conversations with children about responsible digital behavior and online safety.
Stay informed through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and Canvas Parent App to track student assignments, grades, and communication.
Parents are encouraged to model responsible digital habits and help students develop balanced, healthy relationships with technology. Contact the Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Learning department for age-appropriate resources.
OKCPS implements multiple layers of digital safety to protect students online:
On-campus filtering: Devices connected to district networks are filtered using industry-standard tools to block harmful or inappropriate content.
Off-campus filtering: Lightspeed filtering extends protections to devices used on home or public Wi-Fi networks.
Content monitoring: The district will monitor student activity within Google Workspace and email, flagging content that may indicate safety concerns such as bullying, violence, or self-harm.
These tools work together to create a safe digital environment while empowering students to develop positive online habits.
Proper care helps extend device life and minimize disruptions to learning. All users are expected to:
Keep devices in protective cases provided by the district.
Avoid exposing devices to liquids, extreme temperatures, heavy pressure, or impacts.
Never remove or tamper with district property tags, asset labels, or identification numbers.
Clean screens gently using only a dry microfiber cloth.
Handle devices with care when transporting to and from school (for Take-Home devices) or between classrooms (elementary).
Following these simple care guidelines helps protect district assets and ensures devices remain available for learning.
Students and families must promptly report any lost, damaged, or stolen devices to school staff.
Lost Devices: The school reports all issues in iiQ. A replacement device will be provided by the student’s school at no cost to minimize disruption to learning. However, families will be responsible for multiple instances of lost devices by the same student. The district will cover the cost of the first replacement. If a second device is lost, the family will be responsible for 50% of the replacement cost. For a third or subsequent loss, the family will be responsible for 100% of the replacement cost.
Stolen Devices: Families or school administrators must file a police report, and a copy of the report must be provided to the school for documentation. Stolen devices are exempt from device replacement fees
Damaged Devices: If damage is due to negligence, intentional misuse, or repeated incidents, the family will be responsible for replacement or repair costs. Arrangements will be made for families demonstrating financial hardship.
The district will maintain clear documentation protocols for all device incidents to ensure accountability, consistency, and accurate inventory management.
District-issued devices are valuable learning tools, and we ask for your partnership in their care.
Reporting Incidents: If a device is lost, stolen, or damaged, it is crucial to report the incident to school staff immediately. Prompt reporting helps us address the issue quickly and ensure continued access to learning.
Financial Responsibility: Students and parents/guardians are responsible for the care of district-issued devices. In cases of loss, theft, or damage (whether accidental or due to negligence/intentional misuse), there may be associated financial contributions required for repair or replacement.
Where to Find Details: For comprehensive information on specific costs, procedures, and the full terms regarding device responsibility, please refer to the Student/Parent Device Agreement. This document outlines all the details you need to know.
If a student violates technology policies, consequences may include, but are not limited to:
Loss of take-home privileges (if applicable).
Restriction or suspension of device access.
Disciplinary action as outlined in the OKCPS Student Code of Conduct.
Legal action for serious or criminal offenses involving misuse of district technology resources.
The district remains committed to providing additional education and support to students who require coaching on responsible technology use.
