The empowerOKCPS initiative is rooted in the belief that every student deserves equitable access to digital learning tools that enhance instruction, foster creativity, and prepare students for success in a technology-driven world. The District remains committed to expanding opportunities for learning both inside and outside of the traditional school day. While the long-term vision is to provide all students with devices that support learning beyond textbooks, classrooms, and school hours, current practices reflect a more measured approach based on district readiness and sustainability.
Currently, the standard model assigns mobile devices to students for in-class instructional use during the school day. Students keep these devices at school, where they are securely stored when not in use. Under the 1:1 Take-Home model, students may be authorized to take devices home, allowing for extended learning opportunities outside of the school building. This model is implemented at each school’s discretion based on local community readiness and student responsibility.
Mobile devices are available for students to use during daily academic instruction while at school. Devices remain on campus and are securely stored when not in use.
Students may be authorized to take an assigned device home to support extended learning opportunities. Regardless of model, all devices will be returned to the school quarterly for condition check, then before the end of the academic year.
Young learners benefit from iPads, which offer intuitive touch-screen navigation, interactive educational apps, accessibility features for diverse learners, and age-appropriate digital content.
As students advance academically, Chromebooks provide robust functionality for research, content creation, collaboration, and access to Google Workspace for Education, equipping students with essential digital skills for college and career readiness.
