Before attempting to operate any machine or equipment, know the safest way to do the job. Unauthorized use of equipment or machinery is prohibited. Adjustments and repairs of machinery is to be done by authorized personnel only. Tampering or destroying safety equipment places all employees at risk and will be not tolerated.
The most important personal contribution to safety is a clean work area. Always keep your work area in a neat and orderly manner. Clean spills up immediately. Keep aisles, doorways and exits clear at all times. Store supplies in a neat and orderly fashion, do not stack and they must be at least 18 inches from the ceiling. No supplies are to be kept directly on the floor.
DO NOT BLOCK FIRE EXTINGUISHERS, SAFETY SHOWERS, EMERGENCY EXITS, OR ELECTRICAL PANELS
Labcorp is a NON-SMOKING facility. Smoking is not allowed 50 feet of the entrance of Labcorp facilities. Vaping and use of other tobacco products are prohibited.
Servicing of electrical panels and/or equipment must be performed by certified electrical contractor. A 3-foot clearance must be maintained around the electrical panels.
Discomfort can occur to some people while they are performing job duties other than keyboard tasks. There are a number of steps that can be taken to reduce the chance that any job or task will cause discomfort to a worker.
Sit Down Office Work –
No matter how good the design, if we are in the same position for hours on end, our body is going to give us signals that it wants something else (typically via pain or discomfort). It is good practice that every 1-2 hours of sitting you should take a 1-2-minute break to stretch out your neck, back and legs.
Working with Specimens –
The major target areas when working with specimens are the neck, upper back, finger flexors and wrists. Consider the 20/20 rule -- for every 20 minutes in a certain posture or repeating a certain task, spend 20 seconds moving in the OPPOSITE direction.
Symmetry –
When setting up your workspace, position items to avoid overreaching and twisting. Neutral Positioning is the GOAL.
Phlebotomy Chairs –
All our phlebotomy chairs are adjustable to move the arm up/down to position the patient arm to the height of the collector. Be mindful of this function as bending over to draw blood can result in strain on the neck and back area.
Dry Ice can be hazardous to your eyes and skin. In the event your site performs collections requiring the use of dry ice (example: Allomap), employees must complete the dry ice safety training found on LearningPath and utilize the required PPE, goggles or face shield, lab coat and thermally insulated gloves. STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO HANDLE DRY ICE.
Photo identification badges must be visible at all times while at the location. Lost badges must be reported to your supervisor immediately. Employees may be charged a fee for lost badges. Employees should keep keys, key fobs, and access codes in a safe and secure area. In an In-Office Phlebotomist (IOP) setting, employees should not have keys or key fobs to the client office building and should not be in the office without the client’s staff employees. Students must where school name tags with student's first name and last initial.
Labcorp prohibits the unauthorized audio or video recording on Labcorp’s property. Employee’s personal devices are to be kept in the designed “clean” area and not in lab coat pockets, front desk area, draw rooms or processing rooms. Students are not permitted to have personal devices (cell phone, tablet) at any time in any part of the Labcorp facility and must be locked away. Students are only permitted access their personal devices on their one lunch break and not in patient areas.
All vehicles are to park in designated parking spaces. Students are not permitted to park in Employee parking or Patient parking. Students are able to park in any Visitor parking space.
Medical and exposure monitoring records are strictly confidential and may only be accessed by the employee or his/her legally designated representative, the General Manager, EHS Manager or their designee. All requests for access to medical records must be made through the Human Resources Department.
Periodic safety inspections are conducted by the Supervisor and EHS. Employee involvement in the inspection process is necessary to help provide a better understanding of the safety conditions at the Labcorp location. Students are not permitted to be involved in safety inspections unless asked to by a Labcorp staff.
