Teachers are one of the key stake holders in enhancing and accelerating student achievement in writing. Therefore teachers have a responsibility to research and remain informed about current educational approaches, especially those that have supporting research.
Gadd (2017) discusses teachers that accelerate their learners as being those that have effective practice around:
- expectations
- learning goals
- learning tasks
- directed instruction
- responding to students
- motivating and challenging
- organisation and management
- self regulation
He also talks about how the learning needs to be purposeful to the students, allow for meaningful opportunities for students to get involved across all levels of the learning (and planning), be explicit and direct as well as offering opportunities for differentiation according to students needs. It needs also to allow for opportunities for students to develop independence and regulate their own learning.
Other things that also drive teachers towards enhancing and accelerating student achievement are:
- Holding themselves accountable for student engagement and achievement
- Seeking out support (and seeking it from a wider range of people)
- Modelling the talk of learning
- Teaching learning rather than subjects
- Being collaborative
- Being creative
- Providing access to a wider range of experts- learning and feedback/forward.
