This is an example of how to put non-verbal video, visuals, and scaffolding together for a writing activity. As we did this, we found that it was still challenging for our brand new Newcomers. We would simplify it even further next time. However, we hope it gives you some ideas of how to support writing activities with Newcomers.
This video shows a great example of how differentiation can be done in an elementary level general education classroom for a recently arrived Newcomer student. It also demonstrates collaboration between the ESOL and grade level teachers.
