Color Coding & Scaffolding

Using color-coding in the presentation of your lessons can help your ELLs to comprehend the content better.

Indefinite Articles 1

Notice how this slide presentation is structured to use color as a support. We have described the lesson to give you context for your background information.  However, consider how you can apply color coding to clarify instructional items in your teaching.

This lesson is focused on using indefinite articles (a and an) - a grammar topic that can be challenging for ELLs.  It scaffolds the information, first by introducing/reviewing vowels and consonants, then provides examples, and finally provides whole group practice. The consonants and vowels are color-coded (yellow and orange) to make the content more comprehensible for lower-level students.
