Why Newcomers Are So Wonderful

It is important to think of Newcomers from an asset mind set. 

Teachers say having newcomers

• Encourages them to teach at their best

• Brings a unique perspective, talent, and knowledge to classes

• Emobodies principles of the American Dream our country was founded on

• Provides opportunities for peers to learn more about interacting with other international students for increased global citzenship skills

Pay attention to what forms of intelligence your student leans towards. Do you notice an increased awareness when you use music?  Does the student have an affinity for a sport? Do they doodle? Begin to incorporate those elements into your teaching. As you do, you will likely see an increase in engagement; reduce affective filters; create a multi-culturally sensitive classroom; and help students progress with their English proficiency. When your Newcomer is comfortable, look for opportunities to have them share about their culture.
