Options for Youth offers a Blended Learning Model.  Students will complete courses and earn credits in a blend of Independent Study, Direct Instruction, and Online Instruction.  The teacher will work with the student and family to determine the best plan of instruction to meet learning needs and academic goals.  Please see a description of each below.

Independent Study*

Based on your current progress towards graduation, your teacher will assign you materials in a small number of courses at a time.  You'll complete workbooks, projects, essays, and internet exploration.  You'll schedule your day to work 4-6 hours on homework, at home.  You'll meet with your Independent Study teacher for two appointments a week.  Each appointment will be one hour long, and you will turn in completed workbooks, and take tests on the concepts you learned.

*Availability of Independent Study/packet based courses is limited due to distance learning requirements

Direct Instruction (DI)*

OFY also offers and encourages students to participate in Direct Instruction (DI) classes for Math, Science, and English courses. DI classroom environments are similar to traditional school classrooms, but by limiting the class size (5-15 students), each student receives the attention necessary to succeed. In addition to working on assignments individually, DI participants collaborate with fellow classmates regularly, learning together and supporting one another’s success.

*DI courses are meeting virtually

Online instruction

In addition to independent and small group instruction, students can enroll in online classes. These courses offer students an additional level of schedule flexibility and access to advanced and AP coursework. Online classes can take place anywhere students have access to the internet. All students are assessed both electronically and by written work, and continue to maintain regular appointments with their teacher.

Options For Youth curriculum meets California state and Common Core standards, and offers University of California and California State University approved admission eligible courses.

Several of the workbooks have activities that require you to go to a website.  Refer to this spreadsheet to find the most up to date information for your assignment.  Ask your teacher if you need any help.

The A-G Planning Guide is designed to help the student reach graduation requirements, while also completing courses required by the CSU and UC school systems.  This will allow the student to apply to and attend a 4 year University directly after high school. Your teacher and School Counselor will help to set up your Planning Guide.

Check out this list for all courses that OFY offers.  These are the courses that you and your teacher will choose from.

*Please check with your teacher or school counselor for course availability.
