Our prototype has been designed to include as many faculty as possible by ensuring that we provide multiple ways of engagement with experiential learning.
FEXL has been set up in a way to really help faculty engage as teachers and learners in experiential learning. From a structured certificate program, to various learning communities, and even a central hub where faculty to engage independently or join others, there is something for everyone. We have made a conscious effort to consider faculty learning styles, time, labor, and life commitments to help this truly become a university-wide initiative.
Our prototype breaks down the silos and requires true interdisciplinary collaboration.
Once we enter the academy, we often become isolated in silos and forget the larger purposes of our work. We encourage students to foster a well-rounded education, and yet we often organize ourselves into silos that create a faced of division. The AAC&U has pushed for integrative approaches to education and our program helps do just this. The programs we have designed allow for conversations and co-learning—"a transcendent communal whole that is greater than the sum of its parts" (Palmer & Zajonc, 2010).
Our prototype recognizes and values the work and expertise of our own faculty.
Our program acknowledges all of the various types of knowledge and experiences faculty bring into interactions. It recognizes the human-ness of each faculty member and the possibilities of what could be if we work with one another.
Our prototype provides ample opportunity for collaboration across colleges, departments, and community members and partners to design better learning experiences for students.
When considering what support would be needed and possible areas of collaboration, we came up with the following list of potential partners/collaborators/co-conspirators to help us on this endeavor:
Center for Faculty Development
Office of Community Engagement
Center for Global Engagement & English Language Center
Center for High Impact Practices
Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity
Office of Institutional Assessment (for tracking and evaluating)
Community members & campus partners: ideally we could have an online site where community members/campus orgs and departments can submit proposals or ideas/partner with professors?
Internal & external partners
Campus Inventory: Public-facing website/inventory the campus (academic and SEES) to highlight experiential learning opportunities that already exist
Media/Communications (publicizing, faculty publicly sharing ideas):
inventory of ideas/problems that all stakeholders can access
advising connection: help publicize to advisors of which courses or faculty using XL
What's new and innovative about your solution at ODU?
This prototype supports and enhances faculty learning and development as it relates to experiential learning.
This prototype designs a university website that serves as a hub for experiential learning. The website would include a centralized place for faculty and staff to access shared resources, information, trainings, networking and funding opportunities. It would also provide a space to spotlight faculty and staff using experiential learning in their classrooms.
This prototype provides access to an informal, online learning community where faculty are able to communicate with one another about XL and share ideas, resources, across time and space.
