Probably not. But what we can do is try our best to avoid concussions by following a few rules. Of course you cannot control if you get tacked on a soccer pitch or you accidentally fall down some stairs, but you can definitely try to avoid situations where you are put into unneeded danger.
Helmets are not proven to prevent concussions. Because a concussion can be caused by the brain bouncing or twisting inside the skull, a helmet on the outside of the head cannot stop this internal movement from happening. If you fall off a bicycle and stop when you land on the ground, your brain will continue to travel within the skull and hit the skull wall.
However, you should still wear a helmet made for the activity. Helmets are an essential piece of protective equipment because they can prevent other types of serious head injuries, such as skull fractures. It may also lessen the severity of a concussion.
To protect your head as much as possible, you should always wear a properly fitted and well-maintained helmet when participating in contact sports, bicycling, motorcycling, snowboarding, or any other activity that carries a risk of head injury. Make sure that the helmet is intended for use in your chosen activity, as they are made to protect your head from the specific falls/impacts that are expected.
