Meet the Teachers
Albany Community School
Albany Community School
I am teaching my 4th year of science at ACS. Before landing at ACS, I led backpacking trips for teens in Yosemite National Park during the summer, and taught outdoor education in Washington, Arizona, California, and Maine. I bring a variety of experiences to my teaching role at ACS, including volunteering with a manatee rehabilitation center in Belize, studying biodiversity in Ecuador,
My degree is a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Studies, and a minor in Biology, from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. I am originally from Seattle, Washington and have lived and visited all over the west coast! This is my 5th year in the Northeast Kingdom and I can’t imagine living anywhere else.
I use the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to guide my curriculum, and to foster a classroom environment where students are working together to move their science thinking forward. Students are the ones asking questions, performing investigations, analyzing data, and constructing explanations.
In my free time, I enjoy playing outside with my dog, striking up conversations with new people, and exploring the towns and landscapes of New England.
My background is in Psychology and Education. The journey that I took in Psychology began with an undergraduate degree in Psychology and ended with me obtaining a doctorate in Developmental Psychology where my research focused on emotion regulation and attachment. The journey that I took in Education began with a Master of Arts in Education and ended with me obtaining a Masters of Education through Vermont Math Initiative this past April. This last stop on my journey fanned the flames of my passion for all things mathematical. Math is a language for me and I cannot wait to share it.
My experience as a teacher includes 2 years as an interventionist at St Albans City School, 2 years as the 4th grade teacher at Bishop Marshall and 5 years as the K-8 Math Interventionist at Fairfield Center School. During my time at Fairfield, I served as the 5-6 Math & Science teacher for the district’s Virtual Academy during the 2021-2022 school year. That experience helped me realize that I wanted to return to the classroom, and I am excited that I will be able to pursue that want here at ACS.
Outside of teaching math you can probably find me walking the dirt roads in Albany. In addition to walking, I enjoy other forms of exercise, spending time with my partner, conversations with my son - now living in Wilmington, NC, reading, singing, dancing and, of course, sleeping.
I graduated from Northern Vermont University - Lyndon with a bachelor's in English: Secondary Education. While this is my third year as a classroom teacher (and second year at Albany), I have five years of experience working in and running an after-school program and summer camp. I have a deep love of literature and history and I can't wait to bring that into the classroom!
I strive to foster a classroom environment that is welcoming and inclusive while allowing students to be comfortable making mistakes, exploring new ideas, and challenging themselves. In addition, my educational philosophy includes the idea that students should be co-creators in their learning. It is my ultimate goal not only to teach students to think critically and develop a thorough understanding of the content but also to ignite a desire for lifelong learning.
Outside of school, you can find me playing music, exploring outside with my dog, or reading a good book. Sometimes you can even find me on the stage doing theatre!
