Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to all our returning students and families, and welcome to new students and families! I hope you all had an enjoyable summer with your family.
It is my absolute pleasure to introduce myself as the new Principal of St. Marguerite d'Youville School. My name is Mrs. Nicole Brooks, and I am excited to be joining the SMY community. I look forward to meeting all of you over the coming days and weeks, and at our upcoming Information Evening on Thursday, September 11th, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 pm.
As a staff, we are very excited for the new school year and have been working diligently this week to prepare for the return of students. A big thank you to Mr. Grenier, our head caretaker and to his team for their work preparing our school for the upcoming school year!
On the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 2, class lists will be posted outside on the school walls for you to locate your child’s new class and teacher. Please refer to the school map (Drop-off/Pick Up/Entrance Map) to find out where your child will line up in the mornings every day this year with their class.
There have been a few changes in our SMY staff, and I have the pleasure of introducing the following new staff:

If your contact information has changed over the summer or if it changes over the course of the school year, please advise us so that we have accurate and up-to-date information. The most efficient way to do this is to email the school with the specific details at: Marguerite.dYouville@ocsb.ca.
Together with the staff of SMY, I look forward to an amazing school year filled with growth, learning, and success for all our students.

SMY Parent Information/Curriculum evening will be held on Thursday, September 11th, from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm. This will be an opportunity for parents/guardians to come into the school, visit their child(ren)'s classroom(s), and ask their child’s educators any questions they may have about the school environment and Grade curriculum. Specific questions/discussions about individual children are saved for the first interview night, in November, or for a phone call with your child's teacher at another time.
Our Attendance Phone Line: It is imperative that you let us know when your child(ren) will be late or missing school. To inform us of a lateness or absence, call the school at our Absence Phone Line 613-737-4020. Please save this number to your phone contacts for easy use.
There is a link below that includes a map of the school, classroom locations and entrances. It will also be posted under "School News" on our school website.
Drop-off/Pick-Up/Entrance Map
Morning drop-off is between 8:20 a.m. and 8:35 a.m. Do not drop your child off at school before 8:20 a.m., as there is no supervision on the yard before 8:20 a.m.
The only vehicles allowed to enter school property during pick-up and drop-off times are school buses and Special Transportation Vehicles, and when necessary, school/school board staff. The entrance will be blocked with pylons.
We encourage parents to walk with their child(ren) to school. If you are driving, you will need to park on Lorry Greenberg or a side street. If you are crossing the street, please use one of the crosswalks, and please remind your child to use the crosswalk if they are walking to school without you.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL ONLY:
Parents may walk their children into the school yard to meet their teacher and their new class.
Class lists will be posted outside on a wall near their class entrance.
Kindergarten Drop-Off: First week only.
Parents are welcome to enter the yard to drop their child off to one of our staff members for the first week of school. Kindergarten parents: Senior Kindergarten students begin school on Wednesday, September 3rd. Junior Kindergarten students will begin school on the school day following the date of their orientation meeting (not the same day as orientation).
Subsequent Student Drop-Offs:
We are going to ask that parents drop their child off at the Primary Yard Gate (Grades 1, 2, 3) or at the Junior Yard Gate (Grades 4, 5, 6). Once your child has entered the yard through the gate, please move away from the gate and fence area to allow others to drop off their children. Parents are not to enter the school yard. Students are to walk without their parents from the gate to their schoolyard area. Our staff are available to help students as needed.
End of Day Dismissal Procedures:
Kindergarten: We ask that kinder parents pick up their child(ren) between 3:00 and 3:05 p.m., at the same location as the morning drop-off (the gate on the western side of the school). Please remain near the path or grassy area outside of the gate, and staff will walk students to the gate and direct them to you. Please do not come onto the yard to find your child.
Primary (Grades 1, 2, 3): Classes will begin exiting the building at 3:05 p.m. Please wait for your child(ren) on the path or grassy area outside of the gate in the same location as morning drop-off. Please do not come onto the yard to find your child.
Junior Dismissal (gr. 4, 5, 6): Classes will begin exiting the building at 3:05 p.m. The teachers will let students go when a parent is identified. Please wait on or near the junior pathway or the gate closest to the main entrance, and your child will walk to you. Please do not come onto the yard to find your child. Students who walk/bike home without a parent will be dismissed at 3:05 p.m. Please inform the school in writing (email to Marguerite.dYouville@ocsb.ca) if you would like your child(ren) to walk/bike home without an adult, or if they are getting picked up by the parent of another student.
Foods containing nuts (tree nuts or legumes) are not permitted at school at any time of year. We have many children with severe nut allergies (both peanut and other nuts); therefore, ALL student snacks and lunches must be entirely peanut- and nut-free.
As per Ministry guidelines, students at St. Marguerite d'Youville are not permitted to use cell phones during the school day. If a student needs to reach their parents/guardians, they must come to the office. If a student has a cell phone at school, they must keep it in their backpack, and the phone should not be seen by anyone. If students are seen with their phones out, they will bring their phones to the Office.
This year, blue bin recycling for plastic, glass, and metal will no longer be available at our school. The contractor who previously serviced blue bin recycling for all four Ottawa school boards chose not to continue when the contract ended in July, and unfortunately, a replacement service has not yet been secured. While we share in your disappointment, we are hopeful that this service can be reinstated in the future.
Paper and mixed fibre recycling will continue as usual. In the meantime, we ask students to bring any plastic, glass, or metal recyclables back home for proper disposal in household blue bins. To help reduce waste, we also encourage families to embrace some of the following environmentally friendly practices:
Boomerang Lunches: All wrappers, containers, and food scraps are returned home in your child's lunch bag. This allows families to see what has been eaten and to recycle or compost appropriately.
Litterless Lunches: When possible, pack snacks and meals in reusable containers, bottles, and cutlery, while avoiding single-use plastics or individually packaged snacks.
Choose "Naked" Foods: Send fruits, vegetables, and snacks without extra packaging whenever possible.
Reusable Water Bottles: Encourage your child to refill a reusable water bottle instead of bringing disposable plastic bottles.
Thank you for supporting our school’s efforts to reduce waste and for helping your child make environmentally responsible choices each day.
