"There is no health without mental health," says the World Health Organisation. Like physical health, everyone has mental health. Physical health is the state of your body whereas mental health is the state of your mind. When someone addresses mental health, it is in reference to mental well-being: ones emotions, thoughts, ability to solve problems, social connections and understanding of the world. Everyone has mental health but not everyone experiences mental illness.
Mental illness refers to a wide variety of disorders that affect the way someone thinks, behaves, feels and/or interacts with others. It is not the same as simply 'feeling sad' or stressed and can affect anyone. People with mental illness often feel distressed and may not feel in control of there lives. There are a wide variety of symptoms along with treatments. If you suffer or believe you might be dealing with mental illness, contact your physician as there are a lot of options for support.
