The mission of the Black Student Forum is to create a space for change in our school board. We are here to have conversations about the way students of colour are treated within schools while educating, supporting and advocating for one another. "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for"
(Obama, 2008).
The reason for the creation of the Black Student Forum is not simply to create more leadership opportunities for Black students; we aim to fill a gap in education. The lack of knowledge on Black history, systemic racism, and unconscious bias within Ottawa Catholic School Board schools has negatively affected students' education for too long; change starts with us.
The idea for the Black Student Forum all started at a trip to the Senate of Canada last year. Students and teachers from the Ottawa Catholic School Board met with Senator Marie-Senator Francoise Mégie, Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard and Senator Rosemary Moodie to hear about how the Canadian government amplifies the importance of Black History Month in Canada.
Students in attendance had the opportunity to ask questions, hear perspectives on racially charged issues, and learn what steps are needed to reach their goals. The trip was very inspiring and sparked the idea of creating more leadership opportunities for Black students in schools. After multiple conversations about how to create these opportunities across the Ottawa Catholic School Board, the Black Student Forum was born.
The Delegate Journal is a document for participants to log their key takeaways, main ideas and general notes as they engage with several workshops throughout the Black Student Forum.
This document was designed by students, for students, and acts as a means of writing down ideas, strategies and concepts for future initiatives. The document also includes three key elements that the Black Student Forum will be focusing on:
