OUR MISSION

The mission of this website is to create a space for change in the Ottawa Catholic School Board. We are here to have conversations about the way students of colour are treated within schools while educating, supporting and advocating for one another.

We aim to amplify Black History. We want to see Black History in our classrooms, in our teachers’ pedagogies, in all of our academic interactions. Black History means something to everyone; we want to hear authentic voices, allow allies to listen and create sustainable change. Join us on this mission of making our School Board a prosperous place for all.

OUR WHY

The creation of the Black Student Forum (BSF) and Black Student Associations (BSA) are important and necessary. But historically, our education system has become quite good at creating corners for marginalized groups to voice their concerns with each other while the main narrative of public education remains the same.

Now, we want to talk to you. Teachers. Parents. Students. We need you. We need allies. The word gets thrown around loosely. Before you call yourself an ally, make sure that it is the right word for you. Will you care beyond February? Will you put words into action? Have you taken the necessary steps to promote change?

How the BSF Started

The idea for the Black Student Forum (BSF) all started at a trip to the Senate of Canada last year. Students and teachers from the Ottawa Catholic School Board met with Senator Marie-Senator Francoise Mégie, Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard and Senator Rosemary Moodie to hear about how the Canadian government amplifies the importance of Black History Month in Canada.

Students in attendance had the opportunity to ask questions, hear perspectives on racially charged issues, and learn what steps are needed to reach their goals. The trip was very inspiring and sparked the idea of creating more leadership opportunities for Black students in schools. After multiple conversations about how to create these opportunities across the Ottawa Catholic School Board, the Black Student Forum was born.
