We encourage parents to voluntarily identify their child as First Nation, Métis or Inuit.
This information is kept confidential and is used to provide specialized programming and unique opportunities to Indigenous students, should they choose to participate in such opportunities.
With Indigenous student representation across the OCSB, we can better advocate for funding that supports students to meet academic success from elementary to high school.
As teachers in the OCSB, please raise awareness about the self-identification process for families. Families should be aware that the self-ID process is voluntary and confidential. The information that is collected is used to bring specialized programming into communities that may need it. Please also communicate that families may opt-in to receive communications and updates from the Indigenous lead WITHOUT having to self-ID. Continue to pass along the parent letter to families that would like to opt-in.
