Goal:
To teach students the importance of collaboration, teamwork, and effective communication through engaging activities during our Buddy Day session.
Buddy Day Lesson:
Introduction:
Gather all students and introduce the concept of collaboration.
Explain the importance of working together and how it helps achieve goals. Discuss how collaboration can translate to the regular classroom and school yard.
Put students into pairs (older students with younger students) emphasizing that they'll be working in pairs or small groups throughout the activities.
Activities:
Collaborative Art:
Provide each pair with a large sheet of paper and drawing materials.
Instruct one student to start drawing a simple shape or outline on the paper.
Set a timer for 1-2 minutes for each turn and have the buddies take turns adding to the drawing.
Encourage them to communicate ideas and build upon each other's contributions.
Pause and allow pairs to share their collaborative drawings with the class.
Tower Building Challenge:
Give each group a set of materials (such as straws, tape, and sticky notes).
Explain the challenge: Build the tallest tower possible using only the provided materials.
Set a time limit and encourage students to work together, sharing ideas and strategies.
After the time is up, measure and compare the height of the towers.
Discuss what strategies worked best and how collaboration played a role in their success.
Follow-up Questions:
What did you learn about working together?
What challenges did you face? How did you overcome them?
Why is collaboration important in school and in life?
