Below you will find information regarding Small Group Instruction (lessons) occurring throughout the year. Both Mrs. Honoré & Ms. Sandy instruct all students in the course of the year.
There are quarterly lesson schedules provided to students.
These lesson schedules are posted and available digitally on Google Classroom.
Please see the "Small Group Instruction (Lessons)" page on this website for further information regarding students' responsibilities for lessons.
Full Year - Lesson Topics
Posture & Hand Position
Students should be practicing proper posture and hand position. When your student practices, check that their feet are flat on the floor, backs are straight, and they sit up tall.
Articulation with Tongue
Students are working on starting each pitch with their tongue to push air through the instrument. This is the safest way to begin a sound on their instrument, and we are working on developing this habit.
Music Literacy - Pitch Reading
Music Literacy - Rhythmic Values
Concert Bb Scale & Key Signature
Concert Eb Scale & Key SIgnature
6th Grade Concepts & Skills (Right)
Small Group Instruction (lessons) will focus on helping students achieve understanding of music literacy / notation and execution of performance skills. See the document to the right for specific skills focused on in 6th Grade Band at OCEMS.
7th Grade Lesson Concepts & Skills
*Ask your student to play these for you!*
Scales (All Year)
Concert F Scale
Found in EE Book 1 @ Page 41. All students should be able to play Exercise #1 in this key.
Concert Bb Scale (Memorized)
In 7th Grade, students will use Book 2 to work on developing speed on this scale (increase technique on their instrument with finger & slide movement / articulation).
Concert Eb Scale (Memorized)
Range extension should be practiced for this scale. Brass players can extend up through high range. Flute, Clarinet, & Saxophone can play two octaves.
Concert Ab Scale
Found in EE Book 1 @ Page 41. All students should be able to play Exercise #1 in this key.
Rhythmic Skills
Subdividing eighth notes internally at all times. (Thinking: "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &", etc.)
Dotted Quarter Note + Eighth Note Rhythm
Syncopation -- Playing on the weak half of a beat or on the "&" of the beat.
Counting Sixteenth Notes (Introduction)
New Time Signature(s) -- Cut Time
Students are being introduced to "changing the beat unit" within different key signatures, which also changes the value of all notes they have learned in Common Time. Concert literature will include these new time signatures and students will be practicing the execution of new counting skills.
Technique
Hand Position & Posture: Reinforcing what we have learned in 6th Grade, students should be sitting on the edge of their chairs with both feet on the floor and backs straight.
As our music provides additional challenges and moves quicker in 7th Grade, students will be working on being diligent about keeping fingers curved and hovering over keys and holes when not in use. This habit will develop and they will be able to play quicker music more successfully.
Tonguing: Students should be making contact with the reed or the back of their teeth to tongue and begin each pitch (unless underneath a slur or tie). Using the tongue to push air through the instrument provides a physically safe and successful start to the pitch.
8th Grade Lesson Concepts & SKills
Consistently Reinforced Skills (Technique)
Hand Position & Posture
Articulation (Tonguing)
Scales - Memorized w/ Extended Ranges

NEW: Enharmonics & Chromatic Scale
Found @ EE Book 2 on Page 37 -- Exercises #185 & #186
Students are being introduced to this new scale that moves by half steps. By December, students should be comfortable spelling this scale with both flat and sharp pitches (enharmonic pitches) and be able to execute / perform one octave of the chromatic scale on their instrument (memorized).

Students may be asked to complete this alternative to a lesson make-up if:
Their missed lesson was 2 weeks ago or more.
They are making up multiple missed lessons. One may be done in person (Friday make-up) while another via this video assignment.
