A Look Back to 1994; The 54 Year Drought in N.Y.

By Aiden G.

“THE WAITING IS OVER!!! THE NEW YORK RANGERS ARE THE STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS!!!” 1994, the year the NY Rangers, led by Mark Messier, won the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1940 (Which is 54 years). They had to play 4 teams; the New York Islanders, the Washington Capitals, the New Jersey Devils, and in the finals the Vancouver Canucks. The game was a tight 3-1 score when the Canucks scored late in the 3rd period with only minutes left on the clock to come within 1 goal. With 37.8 seconds on the clock, the Rangers clear the puck out of their zone and the fans go wild. Then, with 28.2 seconds left and the Rangers defending like their lives depended on it, they cleared the zone once again with 6.6 seconds left on the clock. The fans were going insane. And the countdown begins... 6...5...4...3...2...1...WHISTLE!!! But the game isn't over yet. The referee called icing with 1.1 seconds left on the clock! The players line up for the final faceoff. The Canucks’ center got orders from the coach to go for the net. The referee drops the puck and the clock hits zero! BZZZZZ the game ends and the Rangers win the cup for the first time in 54 years. Before the game, Mark Messier, the Rangers captain, predicted that the Rangers would win the cup that night. And he was right!

Bobby Orr and the Big Bad Bruins!

The Flying Number 4

By Aiden G.

SCORE!!! BOBBY ORR!!! Were the words of Fred Cusick on May 10th, 1970. The day Bobby Orr, the greatest defenceman ever, scored the game winning goal in overtime of the Stanley Cup in style. Bobby Orr was born on March 20, 1948, in Ontario, Canada. He was drafted in 1966 by the Boston Bruins and at first, they put him at center. But they decided he was better on defense. Four years later the Bruins made it to the playoffs then… the finals. The final was the Boston Bruins VS the St. Louis Blues. It was tied 3 to 3 when 40 seconds into overtime, Bobby Orr comes down the boards and passes it to Sanderson who is behind the net. Sanderson passes it back to Orr who is now in front of the net ( Hockey is called the fastest sport on Earth). Orr shoots and scores while tripping over a St. Louis Blue and goes flying. Then they won the Stanley Cup.

The Great One Comes to The NHL

By Aiden G.

October 10, 1979, was the day the Greatest player to ever wear skates joined the NHL ( National Hockey League). At the time the NHL had 17 teams and in 1979, they expanded and brought up 4 teams from the WHA (World Hockey Association), the Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, Winnipeg Jets, and the Edmonton Oilers who had Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky entered the NHL at the age of 18. When he started to play, most people thought he wouldn’t be able to play against the other players because he was young and small. But from then on he won 4 Stanley cups and only went further. And even to this day, Gretzky is the best player ever in the NHL and world.

The History Of Baseball

By Micah F.

Many people might be interested in baseball, but not a lot of people are fans. For example, you might be more of a hockey fan, or a soccer fan, or maybe not even a fan of sports. However many people like the sport of baseball but don’t know how it originated or is played. Well in this article we will tell you all you need to know!

Baseball was started very long ago, and it wasn’t called baseball at first. In the sixteenth-century people started playing this small game called “cricket”. For the sport of cricket, you need twenty-four people at least. You would need a cricket bat and ball. This sport originated in South East England.

The picture above might look familiar. To some people, this might look like someone pitching or about to hit a baseball but nope. Believe it or not, this is actually cricket!

After the sport cricket went on for a long time, small towns started creating small teams to face off against each other. The first live and competitive baseball contest took place in the year 1846.

How To Play Baseball

To play baseball you need nine or more players. The positions in the infield are catcher, pitcher, first base, second base, shortstop, and third base. The positions in the outfield are left field, right field, and center field.

When you are up at bat someone will pitch you a ball. You have to try and hit the ball as hard as you can to get it as far away from first base as possible. You want to do this because if the ball rolls too close to the base you are running to (first base) and the person steps on the base before you step on it you are out.

Another way you can get out is if you hit the ball up into the air and someone catches it. Another way you can get out is if you are up to bat and someone pitches perfectly down the middle and straight into the catcher's glove and you don’t swing it is called a strike.

If you do swing but miss it is still called a strike. If you hit something called a foul ball it is also considered a strike but if you get a foul ball on your last strike it does not count. But just because you got one strike does not mean you are out. Not yet at least. If you get three strikes you are out. I am sure most people have heard that before.

If you see a pitch that is at your legs or over your head it is called a ball. If you get four balls you get a walk. A walk is when after you get four balls you run to first base and no one can get you out unless you advance to second base then if someone throws the ball to second and they tag you before you touch the base you are considered out. Once the runner touches home plate they get a run for their team.

In the game of baseball, there are innings. Most baseball games have six to seven innings. Innings are when say the first team was up at bat first once that team gets up to bat for the second time it is the second inning. Some baseball games also have time limits so sometimes the games have to end a little early but that can be very rare.

The Decider

by Cole O.

“Ronaldo from 40 yards out… he strikes it… GOAL!!!!” It’s Ronaldo with the powerful strike and a lovely goal.” It is April 15, 2009 and it is the Champions League Quarter- Final (the Champions League is the biggest “competition” in soccer), Manchester United vs. FC Porto. Manchester United, being led by Forwards Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, and Defender Rio Ferdinand, were taking on the tough FC Porto.

They were playing a good match. It was 2-2 in the 90th minute going into overtime. Both teams were going at it, back and forth goals. Manchester United was passing the ball nicely, but FC Porto was also countering. It was such a good game, it took them into the second leg of overtime! They needed a goal with only a few minutes left in the game. That's when Ronaldo came in. They were passing around the midfield, playing keep-away with Porto. Ronaldo dropped back from the striker position into the midfield, when he received a pass with an almost perfect touch. With his quick decisions, he passed one defender with a quick cut. Two more players pressured him, but Ronaldo has good moves. But for two defenders could he dribble away? Nobody thought he would.

But from 40 yards out, basically the middle of the field, he shot it. With ALL his power. This shot had so much power, perfect placement, and was all around the best shot one person could take. “It’s a goal!”, and the stadium erupted! The ball was inches away from the goalkeeper's fingertips, just escaping. The ball hit the net at 65 mph, one of the most powerful shots ever. This goal won them the game, and got them to the semi-finals where they lost. But this goal was the decider. The decider that proved to everyone that Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the all time greats.

Cristiano Ronaldo stats:

770 all-time goals

5 Ballon d’ors

5 Champions League Titles

4 Club World Cup Titles
