Interviewing Mrs. Schmink

By: Aiden E.

Mrs. Schmink, a front desk worker and lunch monitor here at School #4, has her own story to tell.

Having got her job in 2001, Mrs. Schmink has been here for 20 years! When she first joined, she was just a lunch monitor, but as she spent more and more time as a lunch monitor, she eventually got to work at the front desk too!

Mrs. Schmink helps with bulletin boards sometimes and said they usually take two to three hours on average. That's a long time!

Mrs. Schmink recalled a day a couple of years ago when a girl had a bad allergy attack and everyone worked together to get her to the ambulance.

The girl had to go to the hospital but ended up fine.

Fun fact: Mrs. Schmink was the one who made the Golden Spatula trophy!

Mrs. Schmink ended the interview with saying, “My real job is keeping you safe and helping you grow up to be a kind, respectful person.”

Interview with the School 4 Nurse!

By: Lily J.

Mrs. Gonzalez is our new nurse at School 4. She was inspired to become a nurse when her grandmother got sick when Mrs. Gonzalez was a child. She said, “My aunt, who was also a nurse, and I would take care of my grandmother. I would help out with her and when I was old enough. I did it because I already knew a lot of the things.”

When Mrs. Gonzalez was in school her favorite subjects were history and art. And if she wasn’t a nurse she said she would become a history teacher.

Mrs. Gonzalez went to Adelphi for school (college). She officially became a nurse when she got her bachelor’s degree Before she came to School 4, she worked as a med surg in the emergency and worked at School 6, with the kindergarteners. Mrs. Gonzalez said that she loves School 4 because we are the best kids.

Mrs. Gonzalez likes to do arts and crafts in her free time. She also has a dog named Sienna and a cat named Chloe. During the day Mrs. Gonzalez likes to listen to music to keep calm. Her favorite place to go is Disney. She loves it! Mrs. Gonzalez’s favorite movie is Grease. That’s my favorite movie too! She also likes Hamlet by Shakespeare. Her favorite holiday is Easter because she loves the pastel colors and likes to decorate.

I asked Mrs. Gonzalez what the scariest thing about being a nurse and she said, “You never know what is going to walk into the door. You just have to keep calm and act fast.”

Before she came to Oceanside, Mrs. Gonzalez performed CPR, and when she did she had to call 911 to make sure they were okay. Mrs. Gonzalez also saved someone’s life. She said, “There was a man and he had a blood clot in his lungs that nobody knew about so when she found it she called the doctor. They got it out and if they didn’t the clot would have traveled to the heart or the brain and it would have killed him.”

Mrs. Gonzalez’s favorite part about being a nurse is being with the kids.
