What was the mission or aim of your project?
The aim of our project is to build a safe , self- sustainable shelter on Mars that humans can live on for years.
Why was this your mission?
We chose this mission because we think it is important to have a good shelter because people need to live in a safe environment and we think it can be a challenging job for us to build a good shelter with sustainable rooms .
How does your project fit or connect with the other projects in the class? Are we living sustainably on your chosen planet.
Our shelter is sustainable because we have a farming area in our shelter and we can produce our own food to eat so we don't need space ships to keep sending food from earth.
How successful was your action (its OK if it didn't go as planned)? Did you meet your goal?
Our action did go as planed since we strictly followed of our layout for the shelter and we ended up meting our goal of building a sustainable space camp.
What contributed to your groups success (or lack of success)?
At the start our group wasn't very collaboratives which ended up having a slow start. But then we started becoming more collaborative and starting to get more work done which contributed to our success.
What would you do differently if you could?
We will work more efficient as a group, and to assign jobs on what to research right at the start of the project.
Each member of the group should reflect on what they learned. You may have learned some neat stuff about science, but you also learned some other great skills like time management, goal setting, collaboration, and problem solving.
Martin: I learned about that eco-friendly insulation is almost as good as non eco-friendly insulations and that iron is actually a good resource to stop radiation and it can be found on Mars. I also learned that we have to have a small meeting between our group when things are not working out.
Jimmy: I learned that how to do a assignments step by step. first you research about the topic, then you carry out the design , and at last do the actually experiment or work. with this process you will know wat you will do next and follow your goal.
Alex: I learned that you shouldn't do a project as a whole or do it by skipping around because if you do it either one of those ways you will lose track of everything and fall behind.
Lucas: I learned that pulling a team together to get work done is harder than i thought. But also about how effective some types of insulation are. and finally how attention to detail is effective even if nobody notices it because if they do it makes it feel better.
What action/experiment did you take?
First we thought about the Mars environment and we know that Mars has a harsh environment on the surface. The radiation is also too high for the human and there and the weather is also to extreme . the idea we have is to make a bunker underground so we don't need to face the dangerous on the surface. Then we plan out a lay out for our base and we plan to build the base in Minecraft .
The experiment we do is about the insulation. the weather and on mars is bad so we think about what kind of insulation can protect us from the cold weather underground. so we chose Fiberglass, Cellulose , Denim as materials to test which one of them is best. The result is recorded in the inquiry.
How did you use what you learned in grade 9 science in the design?
We used our knowledge on elements to find a good material to build our base on Mars. The things we look for in a good material is how it can stop radiation and trap heat which is related to our science class because we learned a bit about radiation. We also use what we have learned in chemistry when choosing material for blocks to build.
