Our Moon Wing and Sun Wing are home to seven Kindergarten classrooms. Each of our large rooms have spaces for play, whole-group learning, a washroom, and tables for eating. Each class is composed of Year One ('JK') and Year Two ('SK') children. Kindergarten is a two-year program and we do our best to keep children in the same class for both years.
Each Kindergarten class is taught by a team of educators. Two Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECE's) are with students every day. An English teacher and a French teacher are with the class for a week at a time (one week English, one week French). Students and RECE's stay in one classroom, and teachers travel between classrooms. Our educator teams work collaboratively to ensure students have a safe and positive experience at school.
In the OCDSB, Kindergarten is Bilingual - Teacher instruction is 50% French, 50% English. Our focus is on oral language. We use stories, songs, games, and other fun ways to help students learn to communicate.
We play! The Ontario Kindergarten Program is play-based - this is how young children learn best! We provide play experiences that promote learning related to the four frames of the Kindergarten Program.
We eat! Students have a morning snack, and two nutrition breaks throughout the day. See the Nutrition Break tab for more information.
We play outside! Rain or snow, cold and hot - we play outside everyday! See the Outdoor Play tab for more information.
We spend time in small groups and as a whole class on focused, purposeful, developmentally appropriate learning!
We build relationships! Students engage with other children and educators, communicate their ideas, and make friends!
We have times in our day for calm activities, but please note that we do not have nap time in the OCDSB. :)
The Kindergarten teams will communicate with you throughout the year. We also use observation data to plan for meaningful play-based learning and inquiry.
There will be 3 formal reports sent home to families:
Initial Observation Report (November)
Communication of Learning Term 1(February)
Communication of Learning Term 2 (June)
