What's Fact Fluency?
Math fact fluency refers to the ability to recall the basic facts in all four operations accurately, quickly and effortlessly. When students achieve automaticity with these facts, they have attained a level of mastery that enables them to retrieve them from long-term memory without conscious effort or attention.
Why is it important?
Fact fluency frees up working memory, so that mental energy can be spent exploring more complex mathematical concepts. Fact fluency can be viewed as a gateway that opens the door to problem-solving, algebra and other higher-order concepts.
Math fact fluency and the Reflex approach
A six-part NCTM series on math fact fluency by ExploreLearning's Lead Researcher, Paul Cholmsky. Starting with working memory, they detail the factors involved in developing fluency, its critical role in academic achievement, and how Reflex uses this research to great effect.
