Health and safety in the workplace is a joint responsibility among managers, supervisors, employers, and workers. As a young worker, it is important for you to know both your rights and your responsibilities. To ensure the physical and personal well-being of students, students must demonstrate the following prior to placement:
an understanding of workplace health and safety rules;
the appropriate use of safety equipment;
an understanding of the need for personal protective equipment, including goggles, gloves, boots, and aprons;
an understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
the correct handling of materials and equipment as specified in the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS) training program;
un understanding of workplace violence and harassment; and
the procedures for reporting hazards and accidents.

Task 3: Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training/Certification
The Occupational Health and Safety Awareness Training provides a basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). It does not replace specific sector, hazard specific, or competency training that would be provided at individual work organizations.
Please use the Google Chrome browser to access the training.
You will receive a “Proof of completion” certificate once you complete the training. You must either take a screen shot of the certificate and paste it into a new document in your Module 1 Coop folder or save and print off a copy of your certificate before you exit the module and submit it to your teacher. Print off an extra copy for yourself. The Ministry of Labour, Training, and Development does not store your certificate or keep a record of your training.
Once you have read through the instructions and the training module begins, you may click on the play audio button to have it read outlook to you.
Go to the Worker Health and Safety link to complete your virtual training/certification OR
You may complete this training manually using the Worker Health and Safety Awareness Booklet, but the booklet must be printed off, completed, and signed to serve as a record of your training.
Task 4: Virtual WHMIS - Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
Read the instructions below first and then go to:
Virtual WHMIS to complete your WHMIS training.
Enter your assigned PIN/Username that was emailed to you by your teacher. Check your junk email in case it did not send to your regular inbox.
Enter your assigned password.
Complete the training and test. You will have to repeat the training and test until you score 100%.
Make a PDF copy of your certificate when you are done and submit it to your teacher. You may also take a screen shot of your certificate and place it into your Module 1 folder. Print an extra copy for yourself.
Task 5A: Workplace Violence and Harassment OCDSB Training Course
Everyone should be able to work in a safe and healthy workplace. The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) sets out the rights and duties of all those who have a role in dealing with workplace violence and workplace harassment, including employees, supervisors, managers, with the employer usually through senior management, having the greatest burden of responsibility with respect to health and safety in the workplace.
The harassing or violent individual may be a co-worker, supervisor, someone from management, a customer, client, volunteer, patient, student, stranger entering the workplace or even a domestic/intimate partner of an employee entering the workplace and is violent toward an employee or employees.
Complete the Violence and Harassment in the Workplace Certification and Registration Form.
Read through the instructions below and then refer to them again when you go to this site. or try THIS LINK
Enter the following access code: b168OESC directly after the # symbol. Do not leave spaces between the # and the access code. It should appear as #b168OESC. Do not copy and paste this access code. It will not work. Type it in as indicated.
Select Ottawa-Carleton District School Board when prompted to do so.
Type in your name and click on “Begin Course.”
Make sure your speakers are on.
Once you have completed your training, you will be provided with the option of printing off your certificate. If possible save it as a PDF file and save it in your Module 1 folder. You should also print off an extra copy for yourself. You may also take a screen shot of it and place it in your Module 1 folder.
Task 5B: Go to Module 4: Part B and Complete:
Activity 2 and Tasks 3, 4, and 5 (Just reading material with a couple of important questions for you to answer) SAVE your work in your Module 1 folder.
Task 6: Health and Safety Videos That Pertain To Me and My Placement
Click on the following link and read through the list of health and safety videos.
You are to identify which ones apply or could apply to the CO-OP placement you hope to have.
Watch the videos and indicate on the sheet which ones you watched and the date you watched them.
You will use what you learned from this task to help you complete Task 7.
Task 7: Preventing Occupational Accidents
Complete the following task using this link and be prepared to discuss your responses during our Health and Safety Review Class.
Task 8: Fall Protection or Working From Heights Course
If your placement is on a construction site or with any other trade, except auto mechanics, where you could be using a ladder or working from heights, you will need to attend and complete a full day Working From Heights course prior to starting your placement.

If this training applies to you, please speak to Mrs. Banks to register you for the best date to attend. There is no cost to you. It is covered by the OCDSB. You can not begin your placement until this training has taken place.
