Auditioning for Canterbury

Applicants to the Music Program will attend both a Group Audition Workshop and an Individual Audition/Interview.

Candidates will be assessed on the following:

FOR ENTRY INTO GRADES 10-12 PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

Group Orientation Workshop

All applicants will participate in a group workshop that lasts approximately one and a half hours. Group work comprises a large portion of the Vocal Program and, through several activities, including warm-ups, improvisation, movement, sight-reading, and ensemble singing by students during this segment of the audition, the audition panel will be able to view the following:

A series of warm-up exercises (including a physical warm-up) will be part of the activities at the group workshop; please dress in a manner that allows for movement. Wear loose and comfortable (yet neat!) clothing.

Immediately following the "Welcome session" in the auditorium, students will report to the designated room for the Group Audition and check in with the Vocal Teacher or Student Helpers stationed there.

Individual Audition/Interview

All students will have an individual performance audition and an interview with the audition panel that will last approximately 20 minutes.

The audition will include the following components:

All students will be asked to share the reason(s) that they would like to be part of the Vocal Music program at Canterbury HS.

Students will have an opportunity to ask questions about the school and the program and to tell the audition panel about themselves.

Students should give themselves plenty of time before the audition to relax and get mentally prepared. While all candidates are expected to arrive warmed up and ready to sing, there will be a room available for any last minute preparations.

Students will receive the results of their audition by mail once auditions in all of the arts areas have been completed. Notifications of results are usually received by mid- March.

Performance Requirements

Candidates applying for Vocal Music are to prepare repertoire according to the SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS. The solo repertoire will be a piece of music that demonstrates the range of you voice and your best vocal sound.

The student does NOT need to bring copies of the music for the audition panel.

All Students Applying to Grades 10, 11, or 12

Students applying to Music for grades 10, 11, or 12 will need to write a theory test based on the previous year's exam.  The Canterbury Arts Coordinator will contact you with details of time and place for you to write the test.

Each book listed below should be learned and studied in its entirety to prepare for this portion of the audition.
