The Mathematics Department at A.Y. offers a wide range of courses to support the many levels and interests of our students. Course choices range from locally developed, applied and academic in grade nine to workplace, college, and university level in the senior years. Our dedicated team of professionals challenge all students to meet high expectations and to ensure that our students find success.
We are very proud of our students and their accomplishments. A.Y. students consistently exceed provincial and board standards in both Grade 9 applied and academic EQAO testing. In grade 12, students have the opportunity to take the AP® Calculus course to gain a headstart on first year University. Enrichment opportunities are offered through our mathematics club, encouraging students to participate in provincial and national mathematics competitions. Every year, A.Y. Jackson students receive certificates of distinction and medals from these competitions.
Our faculty offers support for our students’ different learning styles in a variety of ways. The use of technology (including graphing calculators, dynamic geometry software, spreadsheets, and Smart Boards), manipulatives, and investigative approaches to learning engage our students, allowing them to see, touch, and experience the mathematics. Extra help for students is offered during lunch period, as well as before and after school. Peer tutors are available to offer one-on-one assistance.
