ART 1 & ART 2: A Progressive Studio Art Experience

ART 1 and ART 2 are engaging, project-based visual arts courses designed to help students build skills, confidence, creativity, and a personal artistic voice. Each one-semester, five-credit course provides clear instruction, visual supports, guided practice, planning opportunities, and open-ended choices that make meaningful art experiences accessible to a wide range of learners. Students do more than complete attractive projects—they learn how artists observe, experiment, solve problems, communicate ideas, revise their work, and reflect on their growth.

ART 1: Foundations of Art Exploration introduces students to a broad range of materials and approaches through Watercolor Experimentation, Mexican Amate Bark folk painting, Landscape painting, Modigliani-inspired Portraits, Georgia O’Keeffe-inspired Flowers, Illuminated-Letter Design, and Biomorphic 3D Sculpture. The course moves from playful exploration toward increasingly thoughtful choices involving composition, color, pattern, symbolism, craftsmanship, and personal expression. Students experience success in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art while developing the foundational habits needed for future art courses.

ART 2: Developing Skills and Artistic Vision builds directly upon those foundations. Students begin with Zentangle-inspired Line Art and Japanese Notan, then strengthen observation and technical control through Graphite Value Drawing and One-Point-Perspective Cityscapes. Watercolor and Oil-Pastel Landscapes deepen their understanding of atmosphere, space, color, texture, and expressive mark-making. The course culminates in a Van Gogh-inspired Night Landscape created with acrylic paint, where students bring together movement, rhythm, layering, contrast, personal symbolism, and original interpretation. Rather than copying a famous artwork, students study an artist’s process and transform that influence into a work that is distinctly their own.

Both courses align naturally with the California Visual Arts Standards through four connected artistic processes. Students Create by generating ideas, practicing techniques, planning compositions, and producing original artwork. They Present by refining, finishing, discussing, photographing, and displaying their work. They Respond by observing closely, analyzing artistic choices, participating in gallery walks, and evaluating their own progress. They Connect by relating art to culture, history, community, personal experience, identity, and other areas of learning.

Together, ART 1 and ART 2 provide a clear progression from exploration to intention, from foundational skills to expressive independence, and from following a process to developing a personal artistic voice. The lessons are ready to teach, visually organized, adaptable to different classroom settings, and designed to help students experience art as a meaningful way to communicate, connect, and succeed.
