The Center for Learning, Education, and Research in the Sciences (CLEAR) is an interdepartmental resource at Oberlin College dedicated to advancing leadership in science education. Established in 2012 through a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), CLEAR supports both faculty and students by enhancing the college’s commitment to equity-centered STEM education. CLEAR focuses on creating an inclusive and just learning environment, providing resources and support to all campus stakeholders.
CLEAR collaborates with various campus offices, departments, and administrative bodies to support students historically excluded from STEM fields. The center develops programming to foster a sense of belonging and success among students with marginalized identities, including students of color, students with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, FirstGen students, and women. CLEAR also recruits and trains students to serve as change agents in STEM through peer mentoring and academic support initiatives. Additionally, the center provides resources for equity and inclusion efforts led by individual faculty and departments.
