This has been a busy term for our musicians who have been playing, singing and taking part in remote rehearsing and performing activities.
On the 19th February, Isaac Skey performed for the expert adjudicators at the British Flute Society National Competition at the Regent Hall in London, and he won the prestigious “Schools Performer” category, what an amazing achievement!
Following this, the Oathall choir had a wonderful day of singing on the 16th March at the Cantabile! event at Chichester Cathedral. Under the baton of Sarah Forbes, West Sussex Youth Choir's Director, we enjoyed singing the more challenging music as part of a larger choir. Our favourites were Molefe’s Xhosa hymn, Amen Siyakudumisa and In Paradisum from Faure’s Requiem. If you click on these links, you can hear the singing.
Whilst under lockdown, our musicians are taking part in our “Virtual Clubs” Google Classroom. We have joined Gareth Malone’s Great British Chorus sessions and are regularly tuning in to Ensemble Reza’s lunchtime “virtual” concerts.
The Reza concerts are interactive and feature a different performer from the Ensemble every week along with special guest appearances from the performers’ children. Last week's concerts featured one of our year 7 students, Aglaia Carvalho Dubost performing beautifully on cello, bass guitar and voice along with her younger sister Laetitia on violin and voice, with their Mum and Dad on cello and bouzouki.
It has been great fun to guess the origins of the pieces and listen to the range of different performers. A shout out to top Oathall muso Kai Britt-Willows who regularly has the right answers! The concerts are free so if you fancy tuning in, just click on the photo below to take you to the concerts.
We are working on a virtual orchestra performance of the theme from Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. Students have been sending in recordings of themselves (and musical family members) playing the theme and Mrs Mac Taggart is mixing them all into a performance. Certainly makes a change from conducting a “real” orchestra so watch this space! If you haven’t already submitted your recording, the scores are all on the Virtual Clubs Google Classroom or email Mrs Mac Taggart for a score for your instrument. Mr Anderson is leading the way with his double bass performance!
