Reading has become even more of a focus in our English classes since we came back to school. Our librarian, Mrs Perrin, comes into English classes for years 7-9 once a month to deliver a comprehensive programme based around books and reading and will be working with students to teach them research skills after half-term. Students also take part in Shared Reads once a month where they talk about an extract from a book that has been read aloud to them. 'Book Talk' is crucial in developing the way students think, it widens their experiences and it tells them that their opinions matter and they have a voice. For reluctant readers, it's a perfect way for them to connect with books.

Teachers have reflected the following:

  • Many students are making the most of having online access to the library and are reserving books and recommending books to one another.

  • Shared reads and DEAR time has really helped students to see the value of a good book

  • Many students really enjoy the opportunity to share their thoughts on books that they have read. We've even had some students say that since coming to Oathall they've started to really love reading and have even got two different books they're reading: one for the weekend and one for school.
