In history lessons over the coming year, students will be exploring Britain’s diverse history celebrating the individuals who made our country the way it is today and exploring our country’s part in events which have shaped millions of lives across the world.
This half term, to coincide with Black History Month, Year 7 and 8 will be researching the role played by a variety of black Britons and Year 9 will be studying the contribution of soldiers from across the world during World War One. Year 10 and 11 have/ will be looking at the civil rights movement in the USA as part of their GCSE course.
We will report back in the next bulletin about the activities students have been involved with.
To mark Black History Month, the library chose to focus on current black British authors. We were privileged to have award-winning author, Patrice Lawrence visit us for World Book Day back in March so we have a photo of her in our library running a workshop with students
When books and resources are purchased for the library, one of the criteria is always to have as wider selection of books as possible, including authors from all backgrounds, and to have content that reflects the diverse nature of the UK today. So whilst we highlight black British authors in October, the reality is we offer a range of books all year round.
We have also looked at poetry and prose from black voices in our shared reads and students have been able to engage passionately about ideas about labels and race and prejudice during Shared Reads English lessons.
