What a year that has been in Science! From returning in September, to lockdown in January and live lessons - I saw lots of lessons with practicals being demonstrated down visualizers and webcams, to a much wanted return to school. We have been so impressed with the resilience and determination seen in so many of our students and their enthusiasm for the lessons - especially when we came back and could get back to using the bunsen burners!

Clearly there has been an impact, and we have been working as a team to identify any specific areas of need in each year group that has been brought about by the disruption to the last two school years. We have planned ahead to build practical skills, recover content, and boost knowledge in all year groups. If you ever have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. I do hope all year 7 students now have their bunsen burner license - I know they were all super keen to get them!

The Science team have done a sterling job in making sure that as many practical lessons could take place, given the changes to layout in classroom, and demands on isolating and cleaning equipment between year group bubbles. It has been an absolute pleasure to walk past the labs and see so many budding future scientists enthusiastic and engaging in their lessons. You can see in our photos a range of things they have been doing - from year 8 taking photos of onion cells down the microscope, to year 7 building ecosystems in boxes, to year 10 carrying out chemical titration experiments.

This term we have been able to restart year 7 Science club, which has been well attended ; they have been looking at how to make sparklers and lighting gas bubbles! In the autumn term we hope to get our new Science prefects helping out too, as well as launching a Key Stage 3 homework clinic where our younger students can pop along and get some help from our prefects if they need it.

We do hope for more of a “normal” year ahead next year, but we are already planning more enrichment and enhancement including the Biology Challenge for some of our year 10, and hopefully the rocket car challenge for year 7.

The Science team would like to wish you all a lovely summer and see you in September!

With Health and Social Care being the fastest growing Career sector in the country it made perfect sense to introduce the subject last September. The Science faculty introduced the BTEC tech in HSC last September and what a success it has been.

Students have learnt all about Human Lifespan and the major events that can occur during a life. We were able to choose our favourite celebrity and apply this knowledge to research the impacts of life events on them. Celebrities varied considerably from historical figures, to celebrity chefs to rappers and social media stars. We really did discover some interesting facts about the celebrities!

Social Care values were the basis for the next component and students involved themselves in some difficult topics and developed their understanding of the Health and Social Care sector. We learnt about occasions when practitioners did not act professionally or kindly and then saw amazing people do amazing things within the profession. Our next step is for students to demonstrate what they have learnt in a series of assessed role plays...let the drama begin!

Year 10 have worked very hard this year and produced some fantastic work. Well done year 10.

Mrs Isley

As we come to the end of our first year of teaching psychology GCSE at Oathall, our students have learnt about a wide range of areas of psychology.

They have recently been learning about developmental psychology, looking at how the brain develops and the roles of nature and nurture in this. Our students have learnt about many famous studies and theories by a variety of famous psychologists such as Piaget stage theory.

Earlier in the year students learnt about the way that we form and store memories and the variety of ways in which we can test and study this. They also have looked at human perception and how we go about making sense of the world around us.

It’s been an exciting year with this new course and the students have worked exceptionally hard. The lessons have been very interactive with lots of class discussions and evaluating different research methods used by psychologists.

We have started our learning ready for next year and are currently studying how social influence affects human behaviour. Well done to our year 10 psychology students for a fantastic start to the course.

Science club is great. This half term we have carried out lots of exciting experiments that we don't usually have the chance to do in lessons. These included an experiment where we held fire in our hands, we had a competition to see who could make the best bath bomb and we made our own sparklers! It is great fun and we learnt lots too.

It is a great way to meet other students and do something that you would not think was possible in a school science lab!
