Breaking News!

We have FREE access to MyOn for the summer. It is part of the Accelerated Reader programme that we do not normally subscribe to because it is based on articles rather than books. However, if you struggle to get your child to read a book, then this might be perfect for them. Details of how to access the scheme as below.

Despite the winter lockdown, despite students self-isolating, our year 7s and 8s have read an incredible amount of books and words since September 2020.

We are so proud of all of our students who have read and taken quizzes this year. We have celebrated their achievements throughout the year in library lessons with certificates, various rewards, and lots of credits. This week, Mr Rodriguez has been into library lessons to recognise some students who have achivemed over and above our exceptations. Two examples are below.

On the left, Emma has read over 12 million words and completed 93 quizzes with a score of 100%.

On the right, Kiaya has read over 2 million words, completed 22 quizzes with a 100% score and her reading age has increased by six years.

Is your child someone who likes to wrtie? Then why not get them to enter this fantastic competiton from the Young Writers organistion. Click on the image for details.

Closing date is 3rd September.

It was fantastic to be able to partially re-open the library to students after the Easter holidays. The layout was changed and tables arranged so we could record a seating plan and this meant library lessons resumed in the actual library for the first time since March 2020. Staff and students were all very excited!

Whilst the library remains closed at break and lunchtimes for social use, it was open to a different year group daily for a book club at lunchtime. Year 7 a been meeting weekly and talking about their current books, sharing recommendations, and then reading books together. Year 8 has read the Night School series by local author CJ Doughtery (who visited Oathall back in 2017) and also read books by Malorie Blackman and discussed themes across her books and also looking at her writing style. These book clubs are purely about the pleasure of reading and it has been wonderful to see our students freely offering their thoughts and opinions across a range of books and genres,

The year 9 book club followed the Amazing Book Awards and whilst the number of participants was very small, the quality of debate and discussion, coupled with the speed with which students read the books was truly amazing. The ABAs are student-led and the winners are only chosen by students. The winning ceremony was held online and our students submitted video questions to the authors and then watched the results on our new library screen.

Our ABA club was small but absolutely brilliant.

Year 10 students had the opportunity to join the annual Carnegie shadowing group which follows the Carnegie & Kate Greenaway awards and again, although numbers were small, we loved reading and sharing opinions plus watching interviews with the shortlisted authors each week. We watched the winners being announced live via our new screen which added to the fun of being in the group.

Book clubs have now finished for this year but will start again after the October half-term.

Year 8 students were recently invited to apply to be student librarians and it was wonderful to have so many applications. They have chosen what day they want to volunteer and have started their training. It will be fantastic to have them start in September when the library is always incredibly busy and especially helpful for our new year 7s, for whom secondary school can be a bit daunting.

We will also welcome year 11 students to prefecting duties during their lunchtimes, many of whom were student librarians a couple fo years ago. It will be fantastic to welcome them back helping in the library.
